Part I — The story
The story
Henry Flagler was John D. Rockefeller's key partner in building Standard Oil — it was Flagler who devised many of the railroad-rebate deals and organisational structures that let Standard dominate. Rockefeller himself credited Flagler as an indispensable force in the company's rise.
Having made a vast fortune in oil, Flagler embarked on an astonishing second act: almost single-handedly developing the state of Florida. He built the Florida East Coast Railway down the length of the state and a chain of grand resort hotels, effectively inventing Florida as a tourist and residential destination and extending rail all the way to Key West.
Flagler is a study in two chapters: first mastering the ruthless consolidation of an industry, then deploying that fortune to build the infrastructure that created a state — a private citizen shaping geography itself.
