Leonardo Del Vecchio

The orphan who built the eyewear empire that quietly controls much of what the world sees through.

Part I — The story

The story

Leonardo Del Vecchio rose from a childhood in a Milan orphanage to build Luxottica, the eyewear giant that came to dominate the industry to a degree few consumers realise — owning brands like Ray-Ban and Oakley, licensing dozens of designer names, running vast retail chains, and controlling much of the supply chain in between. His weapon was vertical integration on an extraordinary scale.

Del Vecchio grasped that controlling the entire chain — design, manufacturing, brand licensing, wholesale and retail — gave Luxottica pricing power and margins no single-stage competitor could match. By owning or licensing the brands and the stores that sold them, he built a business that captured value at every step from factory to face.

Del Vecchio's Luxottica is a striking case study in vertical integration as a moat: by controlling every stage of the eyewear chain, a company can quietly dominate an industry and command margins that astonish outsiders.

Part II — The playbook

The playbook

Principle 1

Integrate the entire value chain

Del Vecchio owned design, manufacturing, brands and retail.

Do this: Control every stage from production to sale to capture value throughout.
Principle 2

Own and license the brands

Luxottica controlled both its own and licensed designer names.

Do this: Control the brands customers want, whether by owning or licensing them.
Principle 3

Control distribution too

Owning the stores captured the final margin and the customer.

Do this: Own the distribution that reaches the customer, not just the product.

In their words

I started with nothing, so I was never afraid to lose.
Control the whole chain and you control your destiny.
Quality is remembered long after price is forgotten.
